Where I live in the Pacific Northwest we have all four seasons but neither season tends to be very extreme.  I like it that way.  Today and yesterday it has been 100 degrees.  I know that many people around the world live in much hotter climates than I, but to me this is extreme.  I am a cranky bitch in hot weather and I tend to faint.  I’m not kidding.

Don’t Die – Drink Water

A few years ago I was hiking with my young kids and it was unusually hot.  Because I am a mom I gave all the water to the kids.  They drank every last drop.  I knew I needed to find some water so I booked it back to a water source.  I made it a few feet from a public bathroom and went down.  Thankfully I have great insurance and the 45 minute ambulance ride was only $100.  Everyone knows that hydration is important but on an extremely hot day one bad decision can make all the difference.

Pay Attention

Watch out for Signs of dehydration

  • Increased thirst.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Tired or sleepy.
  • Decreased urine output.
  • Urine is low volume and more yellowish than normal.
  • Headache.
  • Dry skin.
  • Dizziness.

Kids, Chickens, and Pugs oh My

Keep em happy and hydrated

We have kids, chickens and pugs at our house.  Don’t forget to offer cold water to all your kids and pets.  The chickens will be eternally thankful for ice water and cold watermelon if you have any on hand.

You can also spritz kids and chickens with clean cold water from a clean water bottle.  The chickens will hate it but the kids will be eternally grateful.

Hydrating your kids can be a little tricky.  Here are a few random ideas.

  1. Add frozen fruit to their water bottle to to give water a different flavor.
  2. Give them foods with high water content like grapes and watermelon
  3. Avoid other sugary drinks like pop and juice
  4. Use a straw – kids love drinking things with a straw
  5. Get them a mini mule – my kids love these

img_2594Pugs and Heat

Pugs have smaller air passages which makes it hard for them to regulate body temperature when they breathe. Temperatures above 80 degrees can put them at risk for heat stroke and cause long term damage or even death.  It is extremely important to monitor the amount of time your animal is outside, the temperature in the house and the amount of water that is available to them. Watch for signs of trouble in your pug.

Make sure you have a shaded area for kids, chickens and pugs.  The kids will probably retreat to their bedroom with some sort of electronic device but heck who would blame them.

Relief with Essential Oils – An Alternative for You and Me

I am a big believer in essential oils.  Mint oil is not recommended for children but for us big people it is a lifesaver.  If you have not used mint oil before, please do a skin patch test.  good to go.

Mint can be a cooling oil for most people.  I like to use mint a few different ways when it is hot.

  1. Fill up a clean spray bottle with cold water and drop some mint oil in the bottle.  You don’t need a lot.  I would start with 4 drops.  You can always add more if you want.  Shake the bottle gently and spray everywhere except your eyeballs.
  2. Fill at Tupperware container with cold water and put a few drops of mint oil in the water.  Again, I would start small and go with what is pleasant.  Dunk your favorite washcloth in the water and wring it out.  You can then place it on the back of your neck.
  3. You can always soak your feet in mint water.  Your feet regulate your body temperature.
  4. Diffuse mint in an essential oil diffuser – I don’t know if this really helps or it just makes men feel better but if you have a diffuser on hand why not give it a try.  Many bugs hate the scent of mint so there is an added benefit there.

    This is excellent advice. I often find that I’m so on top of keeping the kids hydrated that I forget about myself. I’m going to have to get some mint oil!
